They can. They just don't want to. They WANT you to look at them, smile at them, and tell them they're heckin valid as they feast on your despair and look into your eyes as your soul drains from them while you're forced to tell them things you both know aren't true yet both know you'll say because you're scared of the consequences from telling the truth.
