After reviewing On Call and Burnt, I'm pretty sure the official party line is that Mike feels that Sandy is owed a second chance because she, at long last is (allegedly) putting him before herself (read: doing the bare basics as a gf). But only because he's (again, allegedly) the one person she can depend on. Mike doesn't want to leave her completely isolated the way Lucy was (ignoring that was entirely self-inflicted by Lucy and that Sandy--her protestations to the contrary--could easily get herself another boyfriend. After all, she's already done so once and he's already admitted to Augustus her pleading was not honest). So despite the necessary retardation, I suppose that makes Mike's decision to turn James down understandably within character and not pure plot-mandated timeloop bullshit. It's too-much-empathy-and-guilt syndrome again.
