Most of what we've seen from their strategic thinking and direction seems to be based around political and propaganda considerations.

From a pure military standpoint, Russia is ridiculously past the point where it should have come off offense and try to regenerate its forces somewhat.
But even a pause of that kind could just let Ukraine solidify their lines and Russia may never advance again after that.

Literally their only hope for 3 years has been "get the west to give up", and that's the only reason they've locked in on these crawling territorial advances.
There's no actual military logic to it...
