shipboard torpedoes, as anon above me just posted, is for last-ditch self-defence, usually against a target you just spotted in the "OH SHIT HE'S RIGHT HERE" moment, probably to take him down with you because the enemy torps are already running

all this is mainly forced by the weapons range of modern submarines
