It's for the AU Manehattan game I'm running, which is based on the same source material as Fillydelphia: Fallout 3's The Pitt/Pittsburgh. Specifically I'm using the Pre-Scourging Pitt as my jumping off point so there's no Asher/Red Eye analog (yet) and the city hasn't been subjugated, so it's a huge mess of competing gangs, monsters, and violence.

I admit I'm leery of falling into the pit of 'FEV did it' like the mainline games but you might just be onto something. So far I've represented trogs as kind of a 'return to mean' devolution; they're all earth ponies (or at least lacking wings or horns) and their coats are all a muddy swamp water color. My version of Manehattan had an outsized requirement for weather control ponies and possibly sea ponies for similar activities in the water so there would be incentive to research something that might, say, allow an individual to change tribes. There's already a disease that causes you to grow gills (if you survive it) so they could be different strains of the same thing, or maybe troglodization happens when you get infected with multiple strains at the same time (hence regression to the mean; you're stuck between two or more tribes). I have been trying to think of other weird diseases for the place so this could easily lean into something like 'horn rot' where a unicorn loses their magic or a pegasus' wings fall off/get rejected by their body (because they contracted the earth pony IMP).

Manehattan was also going to be at the forefront of several kinds of medical research so this would weave into that nicely as well.

I'm not totally sold on it but I think I'm getting there. Probably mull it over tonight after work.
