If a Chinese man was a peasant, their women would most likely work on fields and stuff like that or around the house
If you were wealthy though and binded a womans feet it was basically saying
>look, I'm so rich, my wife doesn't have to work, and can be 100% reliant on me.
All in all, it was pretty ironic that most people absolutely dreaded being rich because of this, I'd rather work my ass off every day than be mutilated like that just because someone can get to brag.
