They were close to making a solid family movie minus the shit pacing but even Nintendo relented to the hollywood archetype formulas. Peach aside (still posting this because it fucking sucks even as a celebrity casting gag) Mario being the downtrodden hero even his family thinks is pathetic until he proves himself at the end felt really bizarre. That's really the closest approximation to Mario you can apparently get with film archetypes? His pluckiness is used to make him comedically eat shit so he can get back up and they can say his power is that he doesn't quit no matter how bad he is. Here's the "end film now" powerup for you and your brother we forgot.
I honestly would've preferred Nintendo be hardasses and made sure the characters were more simplistic to the games and just have a basic nice movie. Something maybe you'd only find in the 2000s but the trade would be more bland CGI of the time. Anything but this hodepodge of writer's formulas bashed into the characters. At least Luigi being the nervous brother and Bowser being comedic yet threatening are archetypes that overlap normally. It's no wonder they're considered the most memorable despite barely doing anything other than jokes and saying "cinema"
