Yeah, that's pretty much what I outlined. The Afghanistan war was about trying to create a puppet regime out of Xinjiang and several other predominantly turkic speaking areas in the region. It's just that East Turkestan/ Xinjiang province was their main target. It failed because China neutralized Uyghur fanatic separatist terrorism with education and economic investment in the region. Ever since then, the US and its Western vassal states have been coping and seething about Uyghur genocide, but they're just bitter that China beat them.

Funny. Zbigniew Brzezinski was the first one to compare Afghanistan to the Balkans. He thought that creating a series of puppet regimes would be easy.
