Jim Cameron (PBUH) said something about just picking the camera up and shooting. I am a writer first and foremost so I can come up with an idea pretty quickly from just taking stock of what I have. I don't try to work outside my means because I am not outside my means and the film comes from me.
You are correct about the feel of the image. However, I like shooting digitally. Honestly, pretty much any digital camera in the mid range or made before the last decade have a real texture. People didn't realise it at the time, like how when you're a kid and you think the PS2 looks like real life, but then everything after comes along... but I would say that pretty much all the digitally-shot feature films from the 00s look great, especially compared to how a lot of things look like youtube videos nowadays.
Film sets are pretty easy to get onto because there's no qualifications necessary. You just have to pester people asking them if they need a hand until someone says yes and you spend a week unrolling some guy's cables. I've done it a few times but it's not really for me. You can work your way up as a tech guy if you put in the hours. I met a guy who worked on the 9th Fast and Furious movie, he was one of the guys working in the video village during 2nd unit car explosions. But if you fancy yourself an artiste, and want to make your own vision, it's a waste of time. The only film directors I know have jobs outside the industry and probably make better money with those steady jobs.
I guess it's great if you live in the big city, but even then you're only another coof or strike away from couchsurfing... Filmmaking is definitely just a spare time thing for me, like writing stories, as a moneymaking avenue, I wouldn't even bother unless you seriously want to get your hands on tech you can't afford to own.

Sadly the fraud is based this time. Targets, SD and Parallax are awesome.
