The entire Central California coast is designed to keep poor people out through restrictive zoning and high prices. The only black area in the Bay Area is around Oakland across the bay. And there are hardly even any Hispanics in the Bay Area despite California being one of the most Hispanic states - they are mostly hours away in the Central Valley. See the dot map - Asians are dark blue, whites are brown, blacks are yellow, and Hispanics are teal. On the coastal side, most people are either rich or homeless - the only middle class who can afford to live there are those who bought their house 50 years ago. And even the East Bay is expensive. The area has some of the strictest single family home zoning and so it is full of tiny ranch style houses that cost multiple millions. No high rises or multi-unit buildings allowed. And the unique property tax laws make it so no-one wants to sell unless they absolutely need to, better to suffer a long commute than to move houses and step up your tax rate, which inflates prices further. The Bay Area residents essentially banned poor people out of the entire REGION. That's why they are so sheltered and guilty feeling.
