airbrushing highlights...

This might not be the best example picture, but how hard is it to do modular gradient highlights like this? Possibly even better than this? Does it take a lot of airbrush practice to master or is it kind of easy? These are big marines, but I'm wondering about on something smaller, like a necron or an oldschool firstborn model.
