Man, stop doing the American thing and referring to Slavs and Russians as synonyms. The SS had several Slavic divisions, and Slavs were handed back to their respective homelands, not "the soviets". Berlin was also sacked by the Soviets, meaning Russians and a bunch of Asiatic nationalities which were under the USSR. Gulags are also a Soviet thing.
But yes, it's normal to feel sorry for the ones who were forced into it as I said. However, the Soviets made a point out of exterminating everything good in their people, since by that point everyone who was rich and/or intelligent was either exterminated or completely crippled. Of course that things like that would happen when the country explicitly stated since its inception that it aims to lift up the dregs of society to be in its leading positions, when they wouldn't even be able to run a chicken farm. The redistribution of goods and resources, proverbial seizing the means of production, and stamping out the perceived burgeoisie was a monstrosity that did unspeakable damage to Russia. The Gulag Archipelago is a great book to read if you're looking for something that paints the general way things worked back then.
Or, to use a /v/ reference, they got the Falmer treatment from the jews.
By the way, I must mention what they did to art as a pretty important factor. When you look at the Russian avant-garde in the early USSR and connect it to how it was used to shape the general worldview of people, you may see a lot of parallels with what we have today.
