It's more about your aerobic system becoming more efficent. Your aerobic system is the biggest player in being successful in distance. This is developed with mostly zone 2 runs.
Still, you have to do your speed work. It will fill in the gaps that zone 2 work does a bad job of like lactate threshold, vo2max, and developing max end speed. You don't really get much faster just doing zone 1 and 2. Just ask the Maffetone faggots. They actually do great the moment they actually do speed work.
