By the end of high school, the social hierarchy is almost cemented and your personality is almost fully developed. If you were a weirdo loner in your senior year, chances are high that you’ll still be a weirdo loner as a full-grown adult.

There are exceptions, of course, but it gets harder to break out of the mold with each passing year. At some point, your neurons become too rigid, and you're stuck with who you are.

It's less about school itself and more about the age range and the social milestones associated with it. That's why loads of people fantasy about high school, thinking that they could have made a bigger positive impact on their future development as a person.

One of the "social engineering" aspects of school is to gather many children of one age together to ease socializing and help them develop. A big classroom full of people is like training wheels for making friends. It's a lot harder as an adult.
