Because the cruel slave master is the complement to the man who is begging to be enslaved. He who does not value their own sovereignty and autonomy has no right to complain about what circumstances they end up in. This is why it is pretty foolish to beg to be a spirit's slave, especially if you don't even know the spirit. It is much better to have the spirit work for you and take advantage of the fact that you are in the physical while the spirit is not. Honestly, it's a form of self-destruction that any scrupulous spirit can pick up on, the abandonment of agency and to be dictated by something else. The assumption is that will be for slave's benefit when it's going to be for the master's benefit.
