You can look up a summary or watch it now quickly, but a tl;dr is Sonic is an alien with superpowers who had to run away from home and ends up on Earth and grows up lonely. Sonic goes on a journey of growth, adventure and friendship and defeats the bad guy. He gets adopted by some humans who live in the small town he's been near all his life. Main MacGuffin are magic rings that turn into portals to where you're thinking of.
