He likely attacked the animals by assimilating them into his form, I think he looked different before arriving on the planet and took on a new appearance due to all the animals he consumed, but before he could absorb every animal on the planet he was stopped. Animals stopped eating each other and decided to form a new society in the absence of the people. Fecto brought extinction upon multiple creatures but the animals that survived somehow adapted to become bigger, either through some kind of evolution or scientific experimentation. They may live longer than regular animals so they can't go extinct, which the former inhabitants feared.
