They outline it here, but basically they are disallowing NSFW games (or games that are mature and adult in theming and nature that lacks 'artistic integrity' in their eyes) because they fear brand reputation. Some blame Collective Shout, an old fashioned puritanical feminist group from Australia (who were to blame for a Tyler the Creator tour cancelling in AU and getting GTA5 pulled from brick and mortar store shelves) telling lies about Steam
>such as saying anyone can access the 18+ games, but this is not true, you needed an adult account AND to turn those age filters off
and games, such as the now infamous No Mercy
>a shitty low effort VN with a few branching paths themed around making women in your life sexually submissive to you, this game talks big in advertising but so many lies about the game have been posted by regurgitated news outlets, do not believe all that you hear.
Since then, Visa and Mastercard have prohibited the selling of not just porn but +18 adult oriented content, even those that aren't meant to be sexy but may contain elements of lewd or sexuality. Visa and Mastercard forced Valve and Itch.io to comply, add rules to their storefronts saying games must comply with this payment processor rule, and pulled hundreds of games off their stores collectively.
Many say this is a scapegoat for the payment processor and card holder companies to blame someone else for pissing off the masses. Because Visa and Mastercard have an effective duopoly of card services in the west, everyone is screwed for alternatives. Even Paypal has joined in regulating against these games.
Thank you for lending an ear. This cause is bipartisan, affects not just gamers but can also ripple easily into any medium (movies, books, anime, etc), and it affects how we can sell our legal fiction and art made. They want to control the products you buy, the art you consume.
