The "to make 3D" definition is mostly a weird beg-ism.

It more refers to using an iterative refining process to get to a final result. It can be a realistic 3D thing, and often is, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. Like, picrel is 'rendered', but you wouldn't call it realistic or 3D.

In contrast to something like lineart where you put down your line, and it's just done, you're not blending it, or painting over it, or whatever.
