The compass taking up a slot is such a "fuck you" to the player. It has no function other than annoying you. Everyone complained about it in the first game so of course they had to double down on it.
In Fallout 1, 1997, there was a perk called "Friend or Foe" and all it did was make the GUI show enemies with red outline instead of green. They removed it in the sequel, and the devs specifically said they did it because it was a clear design mistake: "You should never make the player give up in-game power just to make the game's GUI more useful". Here we are 28 years later and Team Cherry still makes you give up a slot to fucking see where you are on the map.
