I assume it's done at least partly cuz they can cut off the highway north of them between Kramatorsk and Dobropila. They also are on tactical heights from which they can harrass the east-wards villages, at least that's my guess.

Considering the gargantuan forests surrounding Sumy, I would assume that's a "feint" in preparation for Lyman/Konstantynovka direction attack. Doesn't make much sense to me otherwise.
