Sabot would almost certainly get split apart and wedged in between the shell and the barrel walls.

Sabot, wedge, same problem. It would get split and get wedged in between the shell and the barrel walls. Which would then massively increase friction which would massively slow acceleration of the shell which would massively increase firing chamber pressure and the duration it stays high for which would probably detonate the barrel like a pipe bomb. It's probably why this wasn't done from the very beginning with arty shells.
