Kind of, this episode's main lesson was about self-worth; that you should trust in yourself and trust other people's honest feelings. Jax violently rejects these behaviors because it has hurt him in the past, with Ribbit and possibly even Kaufmo. He has shown vulnerability and intimacy, and been burned when his honest efforts proved futile. If he can't provide anything by being himself, then he can fill a 'role' by playing the character of the Jax we see now.

If he expects that people will hate him, then no one can hurt him. He can only hurt himself, and eventually the house of cards come tumbling down.
