My thoughts on the fanbase are in an ongoing development
But this is what I think so far
Yes - I understand this schizo, so be it - why would I want to be normal?

Reality/truth don't matter to modern pokefags they'll come to believe they're being persecuted for having low standards
At some point, to them - it becomes a taboo to enjoy an incomplete mediocre cash grab
And as a transgressive group/defenders of mediocrity they form a feeling brotherhood/belonging among themselves
I used to think it was solely the idea of the sunken cost fallacy at play but now I believe this can only explain some of the behavior I see
I possibly perceive this in other groups of people
Pokemon I think - is just another manifestation of this
