You probably mean as a whole but .
Digimon 02 has randomly the most mature episode I think , the standout in the franchise is episode 23 with Ken doing a biopic, how he grew envious of his brother, wished him dead, and later some creepy stranger on the internet starts messaging him, the narration was top tier unsettling on those emails and makes me think Oikawa himself crashed his brother to create the darkness (not sure if it was in this episode or a flashback during the world tour arc, but he's in the funeral smiling).
That story is played like a straight horror /drama movie and I could see something like it happening in real life.
Flashbacks tend to be much shorter in this franchise, usually to justify an evolution, but here that's the episode, no fights hurt Ken telling us how he got groomed and went insane.
As a whole series I'd give it to Savers, it wasn't shackled by the kodomo rating and I feel like that's enough to not explain more. Tamers is a runner up, but things like the card swap with its own dramatic posing and theme song feels too much like selling toys.
