Bizarre. Maybe just unlucky with what you are buying? I've had people slap down huge bids or fight me in an auction, but it was usually expected with how rare and obscure the item is. The more rare and obscure the item is, the more you usually deal with other buypsychos. They want it just as bad as you do, and they are sometimes willing to fight for it. Slapping down 10k to scare you away is sometimes a tactic. I've used that tactic before to show them I'm not messing around here, I'm winning this auction whether you like it or not. They actually went higher than me and kept fighting, but I eventually wore them out and won.
