Because it devalues them as characters, instead of standing on their own merits and properly writing these characters (as well as they can flesh them out for a gacha), they make these characters appeal to the lowest common denominators aka incels from turd world countries who think a Chinese company aiming to maximize profits is their friend for psychologically manipulating them into thinking 3D polygons and lines of codes is seriously in love you with their twink self insert, these same people fall victim and prey to toxic parasocial vtubers as well who exploit their loneliness and need for attention.
I think example of a good waifu character would be Navia, she's playful with the traveler but it's not overbearing like it is with Citlali who only exists to crush on the traveler, Navia is playful as a meaningful arc where she experiences loss but also grows as a character and there's juuuust enough there for male fans. I don't seethe at these companies pandering at male fans like this because I hate men and don't want them to be happy, I do it because I've seen them handle characters well and because the consumers (said males) deserve better. They just don't want to see it and so therefore I am in my right to call them incels because God forbid you try to reason with them.
