He's done something more useful than saving us, he's emboldened us to save ourselves by championing our existential values. That's a ridiculously good leader right there. Whether he's the president or whether it's Vance, inspiring and emboldening us is his greatest gift. To be sure, there will be hard times in the future. It can't be fun all the time. But there we'll be, passing the time whistling and telling each other goofy jokes at the roadblock while we wait for the next car.
"Look at this guy!" we'll say. "He thought the long sleeves would help!" followed by gales of earnest, Norman Rockwell laughter. The should-be-sleeping children will laugh along with us through their open bedroom windows and plug their ears because they know loud sounds will follow.
