Selfish DPS like SAM/BLM/VPR are usually at the top because they don't bring any raid buffs, other jobs might do less but their buffs make up the difference.
In the case of VPR, VPR is the melee AOE king. It had to be nerfed because the aoe was too good on M6S.
The best melee job for pure damage is going to be SAM though.
