I think Fire Emblem would be a better game series WITHIOUT a playable avatar character, personality or mute blank slate, and instead you just played as... "the player", watching the stories of the characters unfold and taking control of them.

I cannot think of a single FE game made better by the main playable lord being a stand-in for the player
