The F-51 was used as a stopgap by the USAF during the first few years of the war until they could shit out enough jet fighters to counter the new MiG 15s. The USAF generally used older equipment and kept all the fancy toys in Europe or in the US Air Defence Command in case the USSR fucked around. This actually worked out well at first, since the Mustangs were efficient enough to fly to Korea and back from Japan. Pilots stationed in Japan would literally wake up with their families, drive to work and spend the day firebombing Chinsects, then fly home and be back in time for dinner.
