Interesting thoughts. Could be, mine are more banal and pragmatic on that.

Most Empires in the old world were multi ethnic and religion was used as a control.
Most Empires in the far east so China, Korea, Japan were ethnically similar with the same cultures so there was no reason to use religion as a means to control people.

You had a lot of Japanese, Chinese and Korean converts to Christianity for a time before it was stomped out. You have entire christan/muslims states in South East Asia, but the main thing setting them all apart is lack of a ethnic nation state.

All the rest have ethnic conflicts that are kept in check by religions.

Korea, Japan and China obviously had tons of other ethnicity on their soil but they were forced to assimilate and forget about existing millennia ago.
