I'd make parabolic dishes to connect to public wifi with a USB dongle WiFi adapter. Best one was a 8.5" x 11" dish that could connect to hotspots 1400 feet away, albeit at sub-1.0 Mbps speeds. I made it out of a Doritos bag, glue, foam sheet, and sewing thread.

I certainly don't miss being poor.
