José, I work 40 hours a week for $20 an hour. The same hourly wage a fast food worker makes in my country, only I work full time so I have the benefit of health insurance provided by my employer (since I wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise).
I realize that in your backwards jungle monkey nation $20 is enough to live on for a month, but here in the developed western world $50k a year (before taxes) is not a lot of money. Things cost more here, it’s not like I’m making $20 an hour and still able to pay $1 for a meal from a street vendor. I don’t go out to eat ever because I can’t afford to spend more than an hour’s wage on a single serving of food.
My rent is $1,600 a month, and that’s considered a good price for the city I live in, the only city where I was able to find a job after almost 2 years of searching. The rent continues to go up because rich yuppies across the country have recently “discovered” this city and declared it to be an “affordable hidden gem” and are moving here in droves, which the local landlords have taken notice of.
I did not choose this job. As I mentioned previously, it was the only place that would hire me. I was desperate and needed money. If I could go back in time I would prevent myself from taking the offer and keep looking, even if it meant 6 more months of unemployment and burning through the last pennies of my savings account. 40 waking hours a week, every week, are spent slaving away doing tedious work I get no satisfaction from surrounded by people I despise.
So excuse me if I hate my life.
