Making original content back in the day was tolerated, if not encouraged.
Even if it was derivate the boards enjoyed just having regular content and conversation. I have recollection of threads on /a/, /co/, /sp/ and /v/ finding excuses to shoot the shit around media and board culture. It wasn't all sunshine but even the notorious tripfag trolls didn't show up to drag down things out of sheer boredom or spite.

Sometime around the surge in bots, captcha, (You)s, nonexistent or sadistic moderation, phoneposting and addiction to sociopolitical flotsam is when the aimless dismissiveness and disdain here began to fester and anything out of line with that became a target to be made an example of. The shitposters have gradually won out of sheer numbers and frequency as people who contributed gave up and left.
