I've been using MATE for a bit over a week now and it went better than I expected. I think it's quite solid if you want a straightforward desktop that just works and has no bloat, compared to other DE I didn't have to tinker with it too much (just changed some keybinds and a few settings), but it being based on Gnome 2 makes it lack some QoL features which I miss (workspaces overview, windows overview, edge gestures, a proper locking screen, etc). It's pretty good if you want something simple and you don't want to use XFCE for some reason or care about the newest shiny thing. It has support for some retro looking themes though, which is nice. Picrel is a green variant of Raliegh, but Bluecurve and the old Ambience theme also look great.
