Honestly, what people are seeing as NPCs is probably just people operating off of their default-mode-networks when they're zoned out or not particularly engaged by anything. Most people live inside their own heads these days, or scrolling away on their phones - it does kinda look like NPC behaviour from the outside. Couple that with social media algorithms pushing the same stuff to everyone and naturally it paints a grim picture of humanity.
I don't think people are actually NPCs or p-zombies though. At least not the people with a fully formed frontal cortex.
