Dawntrail's MSQ was horrendously boring pretty much exactly because it was a giant guided tour/school field trip through a highly curated series of nonsensical safe areas. It wasn't an adventure, you were just getting lectured on how happy and diverse everything was and told not to think about how none of their societies made any sense.
Stormblood wasn't afraid of just going all out with historical culture stereotypes. We got SUPER JAPAN, Mongols, and Magitek Nazis.
Dawntrail by contrast was like being isekai'd into a tumblr rant.
