There’s lots of great horror in RE4 but they’re mostly concentrated in the gameplay and not the quippy cutscenes that everyone remembers the best (apologies in advance as I have to split up this post into 3 parts):
>The entire opening sequence before you really know what's going on. The game makes a big deal out of pulling the rug out from under you if you're used to the Romero zombies from all the previous games since parasites possessing people was a novel idea at the time only having been done by Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing and Parasyte which hadn't been translated into English by that point.
>The game makes a point out of showing that while Leon is now highly trained and more capable than before he is now also isolated and trapped in a hostile environment full of monsters and has to rely solely on his own skills and wits to survive just like in Raccoon City
>You then get overwhelmed by crazed blood thirsty villagers who appear to be fully human but are also eerily unfazed by the burning corpse of the policeman in the center of the town square as they still go about doing mundane tasks
>Dr. Salvador whose design seems to be a cross between Leatherface and Jason Voorhees from Part 2 when he was wearing a burlap sack instead of a hockey mask/the killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown
>Suddenly Leon falls unconscious and doesn’t wake up until night time after he’s had a nightmare that he gets completely overtaken by the parasite
>The first las plagas parasite reveal at night time, something that isn’t as easily destroyed as the villagers themselves, which the Regenerators is just an evolution of, and you always risk taking damage from its flailing tentacle whenever you try to roundhouse kick it. Now that it’s night time, you will then always risk the weak Ganados transforming after you’ve killed them which can lead to more stressful encounters like in the Cabin and the Water Hall
