Human safaris in Sarajevo
Thirty years after the Bosnian War, Italian authorities are investigating individuals who allegedly paid to shoot civilians in Sarajevo. These “human safaris” were organized from Italy, at the heart of the longest and deadliest siege in modern Europe.

This story of “human safaris” made headlines in the Italian and British press on Wednesday, November 12. During the Bosnian War, tourists allegedly paid fortunes to come and shoot at civilians.

Between April 1992 and February 1996, the city was trapped and under siege. The hills overlooking Sarajevo were held by Serbian forces. A report estimates that 11,000 people died, victims of snipers.

It is there, on those hills, that the investigation opened in Milan is focusing its accusations. Foreigners, notably Italians, allegedly came to pay to shoot. Rich men with a passion for weapons.

They reportedly paid the equivalent of €80,000 to €100,000, flew from Trieste in northern Italy to Belgrade, and were then taken to the hills controlled by the militias of Radovan Karadžić, the Serb who has since been convicted of genocide.

The investigative journalist who initiated the investigation mentions a plastic surgeon from Milan who owns a private clinic and another man from Turin.

He says: " They were rich, passionate about weapons, with no political or religious motivation, just shooting or hunting enthusiasts, people who wanted to experience the adrenaline rush of a battlefield."

An investigation has therefore been opened in Italy for voluntary homicide aggravated by cruelty and abject motives. A 17-page complaint has been filed. It includes testimonies already submitted to international courts, such as that of an American firefighter who volunteered in Sarajevo.

Before the International Court in The Hague, he explained: “I saw men guided by locals, clumsy with their weapons, wearing hunting clothes. They weren't soldiers, they seemed to have come to play.”
