If you breed any dog to a "working standard" you are actually just following old breeding guidelines. Most breeds prior to the 19th and 20th century had very generous tolerances in what physical characteristics was required to be classed as such. Mastiffs for instance had no restriction on colour and just had to be a large bodied dog, it being judged by weight or a tight short muzzle was never an actual consideration. Look into any breed and compare for yourself the characteristics described then and compare it to the breeding standards of today. Even Spitz have become malformed, pic rel is what Pomeranians used to look like.
