The only required trait of a tomboy is having typical boyish interests. A girl with short hair is not necessarily a tomboy, a physical fit girl with tanned skin is not necessarily a tomboy a girl can wear a skirt or a pretty dress and still be a tomboy. Any secondary tomboy trait is just a consequence of the tomboy interests. A good example would be the Sailor Moon cast, a good chunk of them are tomboy due to certain interests and personality traits while also having feminine interests. They aren’t walking stereotypes, the tall and strong athletic girl also likes ikebana, the the girl who often wears boyish clothes, play arcade and frequent places dominated by the male audience also wants to be an idol and so on.
