The ability to hold two conflicting opinions is the main trait of the NPC. That's because they don't actually think, they don't have an "inner light", they are shaped purely by outside factors without any push-back from the inside. A human does not hold contradictory or incompatible opinions, he will either reason his way to one, removing the other, or he will reason his way to why they actually aren't conflicting.
An NPC does no such thing, as there is nothing inside his head that could do it. He's just walking storage for external stimulus.
