Vlc is the better player, when using Dxva you can use hvec even at resolution at 2k (1440p) (my 2014 macbook pro can do this on windows).
Hardware playback uses almost no power and no gpu/cpu usage. x265 is available on nvinda cards back from 2013, if you have a modern driver for the said card (4 years I think).
