Depends in the era.
In roman era it was a sign of nobility but roman umas were all like King Halo and more talk than actual fight.
During medieval times knights were the "trainers" of entire teams of umas, teaching them to fight and joust. Lower ranks knights only have a few umas but dukes and the like have dozens.
When guns became common they're nice warriors but lost much of their prestige.
They're been reduced to races and idols in the modern day.
