I wouldn't ultimately disagree with your points. I think the first Spyro was the peak of the series and the rest had to shoehorn minigames and characters to spice it up.
Like when I boil down Spyro in my head, what made it work were three things: aesthetic, music, and tight yet simple gameplay. You're right, I think I want a Spyrolike, but what I really want is a 3D platformer that captures what I liked about Spyro, not the game itself. I've thought about that some before, too. One of the biggest things I liked about those games was the sense of exploration you had in it. Same with Ape Escape.
I don't want a sandbox, I want a world that encourages you to look around while you're bobbing your head to a killer OST, and having fun while you do it.
