I've looked at a few different games. Tales of Symphonia does something kind of similar to picrel (which is basically (2) in my other post). The only problem is, in Tales of Symphonia, the speech bubble is always above the character, so they can move the triangle around freely. In my game, the textbox is always going to be in the same spot. I could maybe combine the two: put the triangle on top of the namebox, and then slide the namebox around the top of the textbox so it always points to whoever is speaking. But I'm sure there are other options.
