i used to be morbidly obese, manlet with the worst possible fat distribution (left, but fat didn't go to my arms.)
i lost over 150lbs gradually so i did not get loose skin or stretch marks. now i have a washboard stomach and a 6pack when i cut.
the gym is good but your diet is the most important. i lost the weight through portion control, reprogramming my brain with better dietary habits, learning about nutrition and a combination of intermittent and long duration fasting (not to be mistaken with anorexia.)
