They've only two things to play with to bring Russia down.
One is supplying their Ukrainian proxy with weapons to attack Russia. This is not working out for them and is why they are begging for another freeze in the conflict (Minsk 3).
The other is the economic war. They've cut off their own trade with Russia long ago, but Russia has found new trading partners in BRICS. They tried to bluff China, India, and Brazil into isolating Russia but that didn't work and Trump was forced into a humiliating climb down.
So now they're back to begging China to use its leverage against Russia.

Trump's "bonecrushing sanctions" were imminent the next day so he sent Witkoff to Russia to get Putin to agree to a meeting.
Witkoff most likely promised Putin US backing for Russia to get all of the Donbass and a neutral Ukraine along the lines of the 2022 Istanbul memorandum.
Trump was obviously turned around by the Europeans and started to misrepresent what was agreed in Alaska. After the Russians called out the lies, he is again threatening Moscow
