Christianity has always been a religion for the poor, the women, beggars, the illiterate, and all kinds of powerless people.
Those were the groups of people they primarily recruited from. For these people specifically, it was good advice to tell them to never resist authority.

The christian strategy is basically to be as weak, harmless and pathetic as possible so people stop abusing you out of pity.
This of course doesn't really work if you want to be a human being with dignity. But it stops you from being killed.
It's essentially a religion for women and slaves.
